Day 6 - venture further afield we did

But only as far as Ellesmere and then after a morning of rain and a fair amount of wind. Also, it was time to empty the chemical toilet after, well, using it to meet all of our toileting needs, which wasn’t so bad as it turned out. Not great but ok.

Ellesmere is a lovely country town which sits on the junction of two canals and they’re clearly an important part of its heritage. One branch heads west to Llangollen and the famous and dramatic aquaduct (Victorian and therefore cannot be attributed to the Romans), which is on our list!

It did mean mixing with fellow human beings and visiting some shops, which we did with trepidation and face masks. We only saw one other person with a mask, which is incredible considering the clear benefits. They represent another example of the shambolic messaging from the UK’s shambolic and corrupt government. They really are the worst ever and that’s going some.

We had a walk around the town, along the canal and to the Mere, which is a large lake on the edge of town and, I’m told by Rach, is a remnant of the last ice age. It’s a fantastic resource for the town and was heaving with visitors when we drove past on Saturday but less so today. In normal circumstances, you’d be able to hire a boat for a leisurely row on the water but that clearly wasn’t the case today.

A couple of sneaky peaks at my university email account today - I’m still waiting for the University to implode in my absence, which of course won’t happen and they’ll continue to function without me! Losing access to my IT account at the end of the month will do me a huge favour but it will be a little like losing a limb.

The veggie chilli is simmering nicely on the hob at the moment and is a good excuse to open a bottle of red: an Argentinian Malbec to be precise, which will be poured in to two glasses very soon. The weather seems more settled and we may be able to do a bit of wine appreciation al fresco later. Here’s hoping.
